Another shot of working the lathe notice the hands. Turners who stand use their body for leverage. Here I use my arm, tucked as close to my body as possible for more leverage. I prefer the shorter tools, especially for smaller work like pens, etc. 

There is not much on a mini-lathe that you need huge tools for. When you move to a full sized lathe, and are working on larger bowls, and projects, then you need beefier tools. These heavier tools help to give leverage and stabilize your grip when turning.
